Board Members

Mike Terry – President

Mike is a retired Civil Engineer from Fluor Daniel and has been a member of EWB for over 11 years. He has worked on numerous projects, both with the Central Houston Chapter and as a mentor for the Rice University Chapter, and has been on 13 international trips for EWB. He is currently working on the South African Bergnek Clean Water Project and continues as a Professional Mentor for Rice University.

Rich Koenig – Vice President

Rich is a retired mechanical engineer from ConocoPhillips and has been a member of the Central Houston Chapter for 8 years.  He has previously served as treasurer and as university liaison for the chapter.  He is currently involved in the South Africa Bergnek water project.

Andy Child – Treasurer

Andy is a retired Mechanical Engineer having spent 35 years working in a variety of upstream oil and gas positions with BP, Hess and Schlumberger, primarily in Drilling related activities.  A Fellow of the UK’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Andy is presently involved in the Kenyan Kimaut Clean Water Project.

Jen Roath – Fundraising and Communications


Jen has a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master’s Degree in Ecological Sciences and Engineering from Purdue University. She is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and specializes in the design, construction and hydraulic modeling of water distribution systems. Jen currently works on water & sanitation projects with the Peru Team, and she has previously worked on a sustainable waste management project in Jordan. Locally, Jen regularly participates in STEAM outreach events for K-12 students. 

Dan Herman – Secretary

Dan Herman is a Naval Architect with twenty years professional experience as a project manager, consultant, and engineering advisor for floating marine facilities. He has also spent time developing wave energy converters and offshore wind turbine technologies.  In his free time Dan likes to sail and mentor future engineers. Dan has been with EWB for two years, and is presently on the Peru projects team.

Lucy Gebhart – Outreach and Membership Chair

Lucy is a retired Project Manager from BP.  She holds BS, MS in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University, but found herself migrating toward Mechanical Engineering, Construction, and Project Management.  Lucy lived in six countries besides the US for a total of 12 years of 30 years in the Petrochemical Industry.  Her passion has always been travel and now includes volunteering.  Lucy joined Central Houston Professional Chapter in 2017.  In addition to being the Membership & Outreach chairperson, Lucy is also a Texas State Representatives in the South Central Region of EWB-USA.

Shasi Munukutla – University Liaison

Shasi Munukutla has about 8 years of experience in Electrical Engineering and Project Management. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He has been associated with EWB since 2007 and is now the co-project lead for Bergnek Water Initiative, South Africa.

Terry Applegate – Q/A and Training Program Chair

Terry is a retired IT professional from ConocoPhillips.  He has BS/MS degrees in Industrial Engineering from Kansas State University and is a licensed PE in Oklahoma.  He has been actively involved in the Central Houston Professional EWB chapter since 2007.  He has served as Fundraising Chairman, Treasurer, President, and University Liaison.  He currently works with the Kenya and Peru projects.  In addition to his EWB activities, he is also involved in several church related ministries and serves as a STEM resource for his grandsons’ Cub Scout Pack.

Travis Spiegelhauer – Webmaster and Special Projects

Travis has been with the chapter since 2013 and is currently the co-lead for the South Africa program. In the past, he has served as Chapter President and Vice President.

Travis is an Improvement Engineer at Dow Chemical with over 8 years of experience in the chemical industry in functions related to Maintenance, Reliability, Improvement, Operations, and Process Safety. He has a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University.
