Project Summary
The India Project was one of EWB-Central Houston’s longest-ongoing efforts. On December 26, 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered a tsunami that hit the coastal regions of South Asia. In Andhra Pradesh, India, a five meter high wave pushed over two kilometers; destroying houses, ruining wells, and taking out entire fishing fleets. Engineers Without Borders was asked to assist over 45 fishing villages in the region. Members from our chapter worked in the communities over several years. Over the course of several years, the chapter installed solar power generation, rainwater harvesting, water wells, and water pumping stations – such as the one seen here for the community of Jalamma Palem, near Ongole – for the many villagers displaced by the tsunami.
