PAST PROJECT – Bukhaweka Water Project, Uganda

Project Summary

Kizito Michael Waburoko, an optometrist from the Ugandan community of Bukhaweka (est. population 2000) requested help from EWB-CHPC in late 2007. As the Executive Director of the Bukhaweka Vocational Training Centre (BVTC), Kizito sought assistance to provide clean water and electricity for his community and students. In his words, “Water is life. Without knowledge in computers you are cut off from the rest of the world. Kindly try to help the centre with the above two projects.” By July of 2009, with the chapter’s help the community had a 40m deep well, the first year-round clean drinking water source that helped 2000 people. Six months later the BVTC had a solar power system installed by the community with locally-obtained material.  In 2010 the chapter helped to implement a rainwater harvesting system at the BVTC.
