Join the Greater Houston Professional Chapter for a volunteering opportunity on Saturday, May 30 (9 AM – 12 PM CT at the Shamba Ya Amani (The Farm of Peace).
Chapter volunteers will be gathering to give back to this women-led collective which improves access to fresh, locally-grown food in the Houston community. Join our chapter in support of this meaningful cause, for a chance to be outdoors for this team-based experience on a community-focused scale.
Possible hands-on activities the chapter volunteers may support include the following:
- Irrigation: Changing out old fittings for the drip system in the community field
- Composting: Constructing large-scale compost bays
- Water Conservation: Installing gutters and downspouts to catch rain water off the roof of the farm’s pavilion
- Grapevine Trellis: Drilling into timber posts and running wire between them to support newly planted muscadine grapes
- Standard Farming Activities: Planting, pruning, harvesting, hauling mulch, etc.
Anyone who plans to attend is advised to bring a bottle of water and to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots for the outdoors activity.
